Scambusters: Phony NCUA Emails

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) reports that emails from simulated NCUA email boxes to members of credit unions may be an attempt to obtain members' confidential data.

The emails solicit credit union members' participation in an online survey or member survey and promise compensation of $40 for responding. "The emails are fraudulent," the NCUA said. "NCUA does not solicit such information from credit union members. This is a phishing activity with no NCUA activity or approval."

NCUA says anyone receiving these phishing emails should NOT respond to them. If you responded to such an email and provided any confidential account information, please notify Bethlehem Teachers FCU immediately. You should also change your account's PIN, and take any additional action recommended to protect your account.

Remember:

The NCUA does not ask credit union members for personal account information.
Anyone who has received a fraudulent phishing e-mail purportedy from NCUA should forward the entire email message to phishing@ncua.gov.
Do not open any attachments to the e-mail, in case they contain malicious code that will infect your computer.
If you have received this, or a similar hoax, please file a complaint at www.ic3.gov.
