Vishing: Verbal Phishing Warning

Beware of VISHING: Cell phone calls that want to steal your credit card information.

Do not trust that phone call!

"Vishing" is derived from the familiar "phishing." The "v" comes from "verbal", because it uses voice phone calls.

Calls claiming to be from a specific financial institution are being made to cell phones. The person calling explains that there is a problem with your account and then requests your card number, expiration, and PIN. The caller ID that you see is a legitimate number that the identity thieves hijacked to make the call.

Legitimate calls from financial institutions (Credit Unions, credit card companies, etc.) will NOT ask you for information they already have. Do not give this information.

Minimum safety precautions you should take.

Consider every email, telephone call, or text message requesting your PIN, CVV or other Credit Card or personal data as a scam!
Never click on embedded email or cell phone links
When contacting your Credit Union or other financial institution, always use a telephone number from your statement, a telephone book, or another independent source
